Intensity builds as the Wallace Lady Cats face week two PDF Print E-mail

On Friday night the Cats traveled to Maxwell to face the Wildcats. The Lady Cats were primed and ready for the epic battle of the Wildcats, but first quarter ended with Wallace trailing by four, 13 to 17.

In the second quarter Wallace battled back. They began to build momentum, and managed to outscore the home team by seven. Wallace headed into the locker room at the half, ahead by three, 31 to 28.

During the half, the Cats seemed to get a real boost from their coaches. They started the second half energized, and ready to win.

The energy enabled the Wallace Wildcats to strengthen their lead, outscoring Maxwell by five. The third quarter ended 35 to 36.

The Cats were ready for the fourth quarter, but Maxwell wanted to defend their home court. Unfortunately, for Maxwell, the Wallace Lady Cats were simply unwilling to relinquish their lead. As the buzzer sounded the Wallace Lady Cats had the lead and the win, 68 to 53.

Offensively, junior Brooke Hochstetler (four free throws) led the Cats with 18 points, followed by senior Shanice Harris (five free throws) with 13 points. Seniors Whitney Smith (four free throws) and MaKayla Gardner (two free throws) each scored 10 points, senior Laura O’Brien had eight points, senior Katelynn Hild (one field goal) had seven points, and sophomore Chelsea Sowle had two points.

Leading the team with offensive rebounds were Hochstetler (seven), Smith (five), O’Brien (four), Gardner (four), Harris (three), Hild (one) and junior Emily Hasenauer (one). Leading the team with assists were O’Brien (six), Hild (four), Smith (two), Harris (one) and Gardner (one).

Defensively, Harris led the Cats with eight rebounds and one steal, followed closely by Smith with five rebounds and four steals, and Gardner with eight rebounds. Hild had two rebounds and five steals, Hochstetler had four rebounds and two steals, Hasenauer had two rebounds, two blocks, and two steals, O’Brien had one rebound and three steals, and Sowle had one rebound.

Next Action

The Lady Cats will travel to Sutherland on Thursday, Dec. 16, (tonight) with varsity starting at 5:30 p.m., and junior varsity at 7:30 p.m. The girls and boys are playing simultaneously.
