Head Coach Tanner Collins coaches Beau Wood as he wrestles Karsen Hunter of Bayard in the championship.

Wood takes gold, Knoles bronze at Sutherland

Beau Wood took home the gold and Brandon Knoles the bronze in their weight classes at the Sutherland wrestling invitational on Dec. 15.

In the 195-pound division, Wood went undefeated at 4-0 for his first meet of the season. He won his first and third matches by technical fall in the second period, 19-3 and 17-1 respectively. He pinned his second opponent at the end of the first period.

The championship match against 8-1 Karsen Hunter of Bayard went into overtime, with Wood winning 9-6.

Knoles lost the quarterfinal match in the 220-pound division to come back and pin 12-2 Delton Haines of Dundy County in the consolation round to earn his way back to the third-place match, which he won by decision, 7-1.

Other contributors to Perkins County’s 48 points and 12th place finish were Caden Waitley, Trye Hickey, Jace Wid and Deitrik Brueggeman.

Head Coach Tanner Collins said they saw good things but they still have a lot of work to do.

“Our inexperience shows in some spots and a few guys are stuck in some bad habits, but they are all working hard in practice to get these things fixed. I’m very happy with their work ethic and hoping to see it carry over to the mat very soon.”
