Track weather anything but ideal

Mother Nature continues to play havoc with this year’s track season.

Shane Hite’s Plainsmen track teams were able to compete in their second meet of the season at Chappell on Monday, April 12.

But since then, weather conditions have hampered practice sessions, forced the cancellation of one meet and the postponement of another.

The Plainsmen were set to compete at Sutherland Saturday but weather conditions forced the cancellation of the meet.

The Plainsmen were headed to Imperial Tuesday but that meet was changed to Wednesday after the freezing temperatures and snow hit the area Tuesday and Tuesday night.

Hite said he expected Wednesday’s meet at Imperial to be an all-finals meet. That means he’ll have to shuffle some kids around in events since there are no prelims.

Plus, that’s just one less opportunity the kids get to compete head-to-head, he added.

The teams are scheduled to compete in the Hershey invite on Saturday with temperatures expected to be in the low to mid 60s.

To make matters a little worse, Hite’s out this week after testing positive for Covid.

He said his assistants will pick up the slack but it makes it harder for the athletes who participate in the two specific events he coaches—the hurdles and pole vault.

His assistants include Deanne Bishop, Steve Snyder and Tristan Stephenson.

Hite said there is a jayvee meet in McCook Monday and he may send more athletes than usual so they get establish some times and marks.

The SPVA will be in Grant Friday, April 30.
