One thing is for certain about the postseason for the Perkins County girls basketball team. They have a pretty good idea what to expect from their first round opponent.

The Plainsmen traveled to Bayard Feb. 7 to take on the Tigers for their final regular season game.

When the brackets were announced two days later for the C2-12 subdistrict, PCS found itself matched up with Bayard once again. Perkins County is the third seed in the tournament and Bayard is the second seed.

The teams faced of Tuesday evening at Gordon-Rushville.

If PCS pulled off the upset of the Tigers, the Plainsmen will most likely play top seeded Gordon-Rushville Thursday evening at 6 p.m. MT. Mitchell and Hemingford, the fourth and fifth seeds, respectively, played Monday night to determine who would face Gordon-Rushville Tuesday.

Not only would a subdistrict win over Bayard be an upset because of the seeding, but also because the Plainsmen lost last week’s game 37-54.

Perkins County were behind by the end of the first quarter 7-14. Kailee Potts and Maggie Fisher made field goals and Potts sank all three free throws after being fouled on a three point attempt.

Potts, Libby Cole and Carlie Homan each made three pointers in the second quarter, while Meredith Gloy and Potts also added two point field goals. Despite doubling their offensive output, PCS wasn’t able to cut into the Tigers’ lead. The Plainsmen trailed 22-32 at halftime.

Potts, with a three pointer, and Gloy, with a two point bucket, made Perkins County’s only third quarter field goals. While the Plainsmen held Bayard to only three field goals, PCS sent the Tigers to the charity stripe seven times where Bayard sunk four. Bayard shot more free throws in the third quarter, seven, than PCS shot in the whole game, six.

Homan hit another three pointer in the fourth quarter, while Gloy, Potts and Kaitlin Meyer made two pointers to round out the loss.

Head Coach Deanne Bishop said Bayard’s height got to the Plainsmen, but complimented her team on working hard.

Bishop also liked her team’s shot selection.

“We had a couple stretches of good shots and but no made baskets,” she said.

Potts scored 17 points to lead PCS.

Fisher pulled down six rebounds.
