Plainsmen golfers continue to lower scores

The Plainsmen girls golf team continues to lower their tournament scores as they get ready for the  Oct. 4 C-5 district meet in Kimball.

At the Ogallala meet Tuesday, Sept. 21, the team shot their best team score to date with a 463. 

The team finished 13th in a tournament stacked with Class A and Class B teams. 

Then on Thursday, the Plainsmen traveled to Bridgeport for their invitational and lowered their team total another five strokes to 458. 

That marks their best team score of the season and was good for a second place finish behind Mitchell, who finished with a 387. 

Coach Rich Borman said his team is poised for a breakout tournament and feels it could be at the district tournament next week. 

They’ll get one more regular season meet this week at Dundy County Stratton Wednesday. 

At Ogallala, the top four scored within three strokes of each other. Kaitlyn Meyer and Emma Klahn finished with 115s, Emme Sims shot a 116 and Kayla Reichenberg round out the team score with 117. Maddy Ingold shot a 127.

At Bridgeport, Reichenberg shot a 54-55 for a 109 to lead the Plainsmen and finish ninth.

Meyer shot a 115, with Ingold and Klahn each shooting 117s. Sarah Cockerill finished with a 122. 

Borman said Mitchell, Gordon and Valentine will be among the teams to beat to caputre a state berth.

The top three teams at district, along with the top 10 individuals and ties, qualify for the state meet. 

Schools represented at the C-5 meet in include Bayard, Bridgeport, Creek Valley, Dundy County Stratton, Garden County, Gordon-Rushville, Hershey, Kimball, Mitchell, Mullen, Perkins County, Southwest and Valentine. 

Bayard, Garden County, Kimball, Mullen and Dundy County Stratton don’t have enough players to compete for the team title.
