Lady Plainsmen record 11-5 after Potter-Dix

The Perkins County volleyball team has passed the halfway point through the regular season, and holds a 11-5 season record after their tournament at Potter-Dix Saturday.

The girls had a week without games after their win at the Bridgeport tournament Sept. 18, which coach Monica Cole said was a good recovery time, but the team was definitely ready to step onto the playing court again.

Potter-Dix hosted a tournament which also included Perkins County, Morrill and Crawford Sept. 25.

According to Cole, the girls started out playing very, very well.

The girls picked up 2-0 wins over both Crawford and Morrill, and Cole said the team “took care of business” from the get go in both games.

The Lady Plainsmen defeated Crawford 25-8 and 25-18, and Morrill 25-15 and 25-6, starting the day off with two big wins.

However, Cole said the girls struggled against their final opponent, Potter-Dix.

“We dug ourselves some holes, and then when we started to come back our momentum would burst,” she said. “They gave a great effort, sometimes the ball just doesn’t go where you want it to.”

Potter-Dix took the first set 25-23, but Perkins County came back to pick up the second set 25-15. They battled hard in the third and final set, but fell to Potter-Dix 25-18.

After all three games, the girls walked away from the tournament 2-1, making their record 11-5 with just three varsity games on the schedule until SPVA, and six games until sub-districts.

Cole said that while volleyball is a funny game, and it often feels like a roller coaster, she feels the team has settled into their rotations and have good chemistry as a group.

“It’s fun to watch them mesh during a game trusting each other.”

Tuesday night, the Lady Plainsmen hosted Gothenburg and Imperial for a triangular.

“We know that tonight is going to be a very competitive night for us and we are ready to take on the challenge,” Cole said ahead of the game. “Home court, fans, hustle...”

Perkins County’s JV girls will hit the court of the new gym at 2:30 p.m. against Wallace, and later games will follow as gyms become available.

“The JV Tourney is always a good one to have since it’s on our home court and our fans can come and support these girls for three games in one day!” Cole said.

Tuesday, Oct. 5, the varsity team will host a triangular with Garden County and Wauneta-Palisade starting at 4 p.m.

Cole noted her hope for future games is that the team is fully prepared and ready to take on anyone.
