Lou Kraus (1940-2019) owned the Lou Kraus Music Store in Ogallala for many years. He supported area school, nursing homes, organizations and events in countless ways in an attempt to share his love of music with his community. The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage recipients to perform and support music in their own lives and communities.

Each year since his passing, the family of Lou Kraus has chosen one scholarship recipient from Perkins County High School and one recipient from Ogallala High School.

The family of Lou Kraus was honored to choose Savannah Schmitt as the 2021 recipient of the $500 scholarship. Savannah will be attending college at UNL in the fall studying business and possibly minoring in music.

Savannah has always had a strong connection with music and according to her music teacher, Emily Hauck, not only did she work extremely hard in her class, she encouraged her classmates to do the same. Throughout high school, she participated in choir including several solos and duets at SPVA and District Music contests. She earned excellent ratings in all her ensembles.
