PC quiz bowl finishes fourth at SPVA

Perkins County hosted the SPVA quiz bowl tournament Tuesday, March 16 where the team finished fourth overall.

The Perkins County team went 2-3, with two of their losses coming down to the final bonus question in each round.

“We were right there with the best of them,” said coach Deanne Bishop. “Had we correctly answered those two questions we could have earned first place.”

The team beat Chase County 40-35 and Bridgeport 70-20. They fell to Hershey 35-40, Sutherland 20-60 and North Platte St. Pat’s 30-35.

Six of the Perkins County team members correctly answered at least one toss-up question, and all team members contributed to correct answers on bonus questions.

Team members include Ethan Terry, Keegan Sims, Tyler Tucker, Meghan Bishop, Jeb Kohl, Emme Sims, Joe Malmkar, Sophia Perez, Gavin Smith and Eli Busick.

North Platte finished first in the tournament with no losses. Hershey placed second, and Sutherland third. Perkins County took fourth, with Bridgeport in fifth and Chase County in sixth.

Bishop thanks all individuals who volunteered their time to work during the tournament. Volunteers included Don Harris, Diana Tate, Jayson Bishop, Don Softley, Penny Hite, Angela Gloy, Ashley Colglazier, Tiffany Long, Dayami Ruiz and Principal Ben Jones.

“I received numerous compliments from administrators, coaches and spectators who were pleased with the meet,” Bishop said. “We have great people in our school and community who take a lot of pride in  hosting high-quality events. Thanks for doing your parts, and doing them well.”

Bishop also gave a thanks to the junior high teachers who allowed their classrooms to be used during the tournament.

“I know it’s not ideal for a teacher to be kicked out of their classroom for the afternoon,” Bishop noted. “Thanks for allowing us to use the junior high space. I appreciate your flexibility. We did our best to put your rooms back into order.”

The junior high classroom set-up was ideal for hosting a four-room event during the school day, a time set by the SPVA Board, Bishop added.

Finally, she thanks Principal Ben Jones, Keegan Sims and the janitors for assisting with the set-up, and for “lugging the tables and chairs up to the second floor” to be used in the tournament.

The district quiz bowl competition will take place Monday, April 19.
