Pitchin with Pritch: Plainsmen headed for state cross county, make playoffs in football

Congratulations to the PCS boys cross country team and Head Coach Seth Burge and Assistant Coach Tristan Stephenson on qualifying for the state cross country meet.

Getting a team to a state contest is the goal of all coaches and to get it done is a great accomplishment.

Colton Pouk again led the group which he has done all season by placing third. Mason McGreer got a fifth place medal to help the team win the first place trophy for the Plainsmen.

Along with Pouk and McGreer, Brock Tines, Brient Wood and Parker Tille make up the team that will run in Kearney.

The boys team features three freshmen, so the future looks bright. On the girls side, Meredith Gloy finished a great year by placing in the top 15 to make the trip as an individual entry.

The cross country team has had a great year and this is a super way to end the season.

I have always had great respect for cross country athletes. I coached cross country when I was teaching at Imperial and it is not an easy sport.

If you are going to be competitive in this sport, it is hard work.

Believe me, each and every one of the cross country runners at PCS deserves everyone’s respect.

The Plainsmen football team also have finished on a high note by qualifying for the state football playoffs.

They pretty much had a ton of pressure on them for their last game. If they would have lost that game, they probably might have come up short on qualifying on power points since Sutherland won the district where the Plainsmen were also competing.

The two-point loss to Sutherland could have been a playoff-ending loss, but they regrouped and did a great job in taking care of business in their last regular season game against Alma.

Thursday night the Plainsmen travel to Bertrand for the first playoff game. Bertrand and PCS have a couple of opponents in common, as they both played Dundy County Stratton and Alma. Bertrand lost to Dundy County 28-20 and defeated Alma 36-24.

PCS will need to be ready to play tough football because any team that is still playing at this time of the season usually is there because they have some talent.

I am sure that is true for Bertrand and we know it is true for PCS.

Good luck to the PCS cross country runners and to the football team and both team’s coaches.

Here in Lincoln, the university has a great volleyball team again this year. We watched them last night on NET as they swept their opponent again to remain the only undefeated Big 10 volleyball team.

I don’t know if they will win every Big 10 game but they certainly have talent and depth.

The social media lit up after the Husker football game on Saturday.

A lot of negative comments but still a number of positive things but I think those might be getting harder to come by.

Read a lot of articles on what people think the heat factor might be on Coach Frost. I also read an article about what it would cost to fire him and that is a sum of money—the first number has a lot of zeros behind it.

That might keep a cooling substance on the seat for a while longer.

I don’t know what is wrong, but sometimes it feels as if we have a position where the person just figures out how we can mess up somewhere in the game to make sure the other team is successful.

I don’t think that is a valid thought but I have way too much time on my hands at the present to just think about things.

Those of you who know me will know that probably isn’t a good thing.

So, Go Big Red and Go Plainsmen.
