Ohio State beats Huskers in two sports

This past weekend was not a great time for Husker teams or Husker fans.

The volleyball team got swept by Ohio State and the Husker football team lost another close one to a ranked team.

The volleyball team, ranked ninth in the nation, lost to seventh-ranked Ohio State 25-27, 21-25 and 23-25.

The Huskers are now 17-6 overall and 11-3 in the Big 10. Ohio State is 19-5 on the season and 9-5 in the Big 10.

Big 10 volleyball is pretty competitive and that is an understatement.

Coach Cook seems to be able to correct problems that come up and make his team very competitive.

The Huskers’ next game is Friday, Nov. 12 against Maryland at Devaney. Hope they play well! I bet they will.

Ranked team jinx

The Husker football team lost another close game to a ranked opponent, falling 26-17 to fifth-ranked Ohio State.

I did not watch the game because our grandson, Kyler, was playing in a tournament here in Lincoln.

I did get to watch bits since one of the dads at the basketball game had it on his phone.

He would tell me every time the Huskers would get close

When the basketball games were finished, and I listened to most of the fourth quarter on the way back to the apartment.

The Huskers got close but couldn’t get it done again.

The worst part of this season is that we keep losing games by just a few mistakes but seem to keep doing those over and over.

Sunday, reading some of the internet information, there were all kinds of suggestions on why the Huskers keep losing.

There were some things that do keep happening that make one wonder why the team can’t fix them.

It would appear that our special teams need work. We have kicking problems that are big in the special team’s problems.

Another kicking woe is inconsistency.

On offense our line sometimes has problems while our pass-catching crew sometimes have stone hands.

Then there are the problems at quarterback. I think our QB is a good one but not a great one.

Great ones make the plays when needed.

Do I think we need to hire a new coach? Not really.

We’ve tried that a bunch and that isn’t always a good way to try and solve your problem.

Pretty soon no one will want the job.

We are getting close to good teams.

I remember what my high school coach once said about getting close to a win and it was “Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades!”

Fall sports winding down

As we close out the fall sports at the high school, congratulations to cross-country coaches and runners, to the volleyball coaches and players, to the girls golf team and to the football team and coaches who got a little deeper in the playoffs than we have been for a while.

Also just for kicks, not that I am a proud Grandpa or anything, but Kyler’s team won the tournament!

Some good things happen after all.
