Volleyball season is over in Perkins County after a 1-3 loss to Mitchell Monday night in the first round of the C2-12 subdistrict.

“Last night did not end the way that we anticipated, nor wanted it to on the court, but as always, season endings are so very bittersweet,” PCS Head Coach Monica Cole said.

PCS trailed 16-22 in the first set but raillied to tie the match at 22-22. The Plainsmen fought off one set point, but not two in the 23-25 loss.

One five-point run midway through the second set gave Mitchell all the lead it needed. PCS lost the set 20-25.

The Plainsmen reversed the score in the third set. At virtually the same point as the second set, PCS went on a five-point run and won the set 25-20.

In the end, it was Mitchell who claimed the win and sent PCS home with a 15-25 loss.

“We knew going in that we were going to have to play hard and big against these guys and that what their record says is not always who they are. Kudos to them for their play. They put up a great game against us. We battled hard and did some really, really great things throughout the game. We just couldn’t get over the hump for the night,” Cole said. The Plainsmen ended the regular season at home Oct. 18 with a 3-1 win over Kimball.

PCS only trailed once in the set and broke open a one-point lead, 17-16, with five-straight points. Perkins County won the set 25-20.

Cole said the little things did not go the Plainsmen’s way in the second set, a 14-25 loss, but her team persevered and finished very strong in the third and fourth sets.

Perkins County brought the hammer down in the third set, rolling to a 25-10 win.

The Plainsmen wrapped up the match with an 11-4 run to win the final set 25-14.

“To end on a kill from senior Mallory McClenahan for the win, at home, was just how we wanted it going into sub-districts. Proud of this group of girls and all they have accomplished,” Cole said.
