The Perkins County football team held off scrappy Maxwell Friday afternoon to give the Plainsmen a 24-18 win.
PCS moved the ball to the Wildcats’ 19-yard line to start the game, but couldn’t score. Maxwell was quick to get on the scoreboard three plays later. Perkins County returned the favor, scoring in three plays on an Ethan Sihm run up the left sideline. PCS’s 8-6 lead grew by two when Maxwell snapped the ball over the punter’s head and out of the endzone.
As a quiet second quarter wore down, Maxwell jumped ahead on a touchdown run with 1:14 left in the half. Five runs later, PCS scored with 28.8 seconds left on another Sihm run and took a 18-12 lead into the halftime locker room.
Both teams relied on their running games in the second half. PCS drove deep into Maxwell territory, but neither team scored in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter followed the same pattern as the first and second quarters. Maxwell scored and didn’t make its extra point, followed by PCS scoring on a Sihm run that once again went up the left sideline. Although PCS didn’t convert its extra point, Perkins County took a 24-18 lead. Juan Perez and Landon Noyes each had tackles for losses on Maxwell’s final drive to wrap up the win.
PCS Head Coach Tanner Collins said Mason Toner did well stepping in to play quarterback as Dawson Tjaden recovers from an injury.

With the 32 teams making the Class D1 postseason, PCS is sitting pretty at 13th in the point standings with a 5-2 record.
Still, this week’s game will be a big one as PCS heads to number one and undefeated North Platte St. Pat’s.
