With cold weather outside, Wallace golfers, including Ryun Sheets putting and Angelica Vazquez watching on, have made the best of it, practicing putting techniques indoors with coach Rich Lee.

PCS, Wallace ready to hit the links

While it hasn’t always felt like golf season over the last couple weeks the golf teams at Perkins County and Wallace have been working hard to get ready for their season opening meets.
PCS Head Coach Rich Borman has high expectations for his team.
With 15 golfers on the team PCS will field JV and varsity teams this year and Borman expects his varsity to be in the mix for a state championship.
The JV squad will be led by Kelly Smith.
Four seniors, Ashton Meyer, Hayden Foster, Hunter Garner and Isaiah Hatcher, are new for this year, but will lead a large group of younger players.
Returning from last year are juniors Brient Wood, Eli Busick and Storm Peterson, as well as sophomores Will Long and Daniel Hampton.
Also on the team are sophomore Nolan Foster and freshmen Brecken Uehling, Elijah Gaston, Eric Gonzalez, Kaiden Case, Lane Nolt and Zaybreon Hansen.
Captains Peterson and Long will anchor what could be the Plainsmen’s best team in several years, Borman said.
Long missed a trip to state by three strokes last year and Peterson was four strokes out of a state berth.
Both bring a strong sense of unfinished business, Borman said.
Busick, Hampton and Wood have all improved tremendously, according to Borman, especially compared to where they started from last year as new golfers.
“They have started the season with a lot of enthusiasm and are eager to improve their scores as they gain more experience,” Borman said.
The new seniors are bringing strong leadership and work ethic to the team and, with the addition of Coach Smith adding team strength as JV coach, Borman expects to create depth and competitiveness.
Borman highlighted Hansen as a newcomer to watch and expects him to compete for a starting varsity spot this year.
“He was team manager last year and has the kind of work ethic, talent and dedication it takes to shoot very low scores,” Borman said.
Garner and H. Foster both are tremendous athletes and bring maturity to the team, Borman said.
“They have potential to be impact players this year as they learn to develop their games,” Borman said, adding  Meyer and N. Foster are also showing ability and improving very quickly.
“All the new players have dedicated themselves to adapting to our team culture and are all very coachable and a joy to work with,” Borman said.
The PCS season starts with a duel against Creek Valley at Pheasant Run Golf March 31.
The district meet will be held at Kimball’s Four Winds Golf Course May 5. The Plainsmen will have two chances to get a feel of the course, at SPVA April 29 and the Kimball Invite May 5.
Wallace will also be at Kimball for the district meet.
Wallace’s golfers are senior Tyler Lundvall, junior Angelica Vazquez and sophomore Ryun Sheets and are led by Head Coach Rich Lee.
The Wildcat team will start its season March 29 at the Paxton Invite.
