Wildcats fall in final RPAC games

The Wallace boys’ basketball team’s run in the RPAC tournament ended last week with losses to Hitchcock County and Maywood/Hayes Center.
Hitchcock County
The Wildcats faced Hitchcock County Jan. 25 in Wauneta.
Wallace trailed 9-15 at the end of the first quarter. Kyler Flaming started the Wildcats off on the scoreboard and Camden McConnell followed up with a three pointer. Baskets by Alec Messersmith and Kolton Hager rounded out first quarter scoring.
Wallace cut into the Falcons’ lead in the second quarter, behind four points each from Hager, Flaming and Trey Robertson.
Coming out of the locker room trailing 23-26, Wallace crept closer on the scoreboard with its best offense quarter of the game.
Hager scored baskets around a Messersmith bucket early in the second half. After a three pointer by Messersmith, Wallace got a two by Robertson followed by free throws from Flaming and McConnell. McConnell added a two point field goal before Hager rattled in a three pointer. Their efforts pulled the Wildcats to within one point, 42-43, with the game’s final eight minutes ahead of them.
Despite two 3 by Messersmith and another from Robertson, Hitchcock County pulled away in the fourth quarter.
Hager scored eight of his team-high 21 points as time ran down in the game. The Falcons made four free throws down the stretch to leave Wallace on the short end of the 59-67 score.
Messersmith also finished the game in double figures with 13 points.
Hager rounded out a double-double with 10 rebounds.
