Helen G. Hagan, 84 of Grant, formerly of Madrid, passed away Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at the Ogallala Community Hospital.

Helen was born February 5, 1937, at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, to Melvin Herman and Julia Josephine (Hank) Gauthier. She graduated from Pickford High School in 1955. Following school, Helen worked at JC Penney in Sault Ste. Marie. While there, she met the love of her life, Darrell Charles Hagan and was united in marriage on February 18, 1956, in Goetzville, Michigan. They lived in Michigan for several years before moving to Grant, where they started a dairy and farming operation northeast of Grant. In 2015, they moved from the farm into Grant.

Helen was actively involved in their farming operation, helping however she could while maintaining a well-kept household. She was a good cook and will always be remembered for her delicious cream puffs. She also enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing, quilting, and crocheting, playing Solitaire, listening to polka music, and attending craft and the county fair.

Helen and Darrell enjoyed traveling with their fifth-wheel camper from the southern Texas border to Alaska. They visited Michigan several times, and they planned their travel so each night they could park at a casino.

Helen was very fond of all animals. As a child, she raised an orphaned deer by bottle feeding it in her back yard. This must have instilled the thought that every animal needed some warm milk.

Most of all, Helen loved her family and enjoyed cooking and hosting family gatherings. She loved the new grandbabies. She was often quiet and enjoyed listening to family conversations.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Darrell; her parents; a sister at birth; brothers-in-law, Don, Dale, and Delbert Hagan; and sisters-in-law, Ruth, Peggy, Bertha, and Betty Hagan.

Survivors include three sons, Ron and wife, Diane of Madrid, Mike and wife, LuRae of Grant, Larry and wife, Mary of Westminster, Colo.; ten grandchildren, Dustin Hagan, Roxanne Hagan, Jennifer Wright and husband, Zach, Jeremy Hagan and wife, Jane, Jyl Hagan, Erik Hagan and wife, Kara, Stephanie Grein and husband, Steven, Christine Dunton and husband, Jeff, Mindy Buhr and husband, Tony, and Audrey Meister and husband, Jon; twelve great-grandchildren, Russell and Abraham Wright, Henlie Hagan, Alex, Avery, and Nora Grein, Rogue, Dagny and expected baby Dunton due in July, Baker and Beck Buhr, and newborn Oliver Hagan; a sister-in-law, Dortha Blomenkamp, and husband, Ray of Gering; along with many nephews, nieces, other relatives, and friends.
