Boys claim gold at districts

Waitley and Dietlein take first and second

The Perkins County boys cross country team was able to upgrade last year’s district runner-up honor for the gold crown at Thursday’s D-6 competition in Bridgeport.

Caden Waitley captured first place for the second consecutive year with a time of 17:12. Jaden Dietlein took the silver with 17:44.

Matthew Hahn ran 18:32 to medal 12th out of 86 runners. The final runner contributing to Perkins County’s 34-point score was Evan Sestak at 23rd with a time of 19:04.

Varsity pushers Jarin Tines and Caleb Lagler placed 38th and 43rd respectively.

The team finished 22 points ahead of second-place finishers Chase County.

Coach Paula Wurst said the boys competed really well.

“We are really pleased with their district championship. That has been one of their goals this season and it was nice to see them reach their goal! Matthew Hahn has been focused on medaling at districts, so his 12th place finish was especially gratifying.”

She said it was the first time Perkins County has had boys finish first and second at districts since 2008.

Hahn and Sestak both ran personal bests.
