Mariah Gardner celebrated wins in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.

Wildcat girls looking to make some noise at state

The Wallace track teams experienced a variety of emotions at the D7 district track meet in Cambridge Thursday.
The girls’ team had a successful meet that has Head Coach Danielle Snider excited about the upcoming state track championships.
The boys’ team, however, didn’t have a qualifier and saw sprinter Carson Glunz injured.
Snider said Glunz is in good spirits but his injury was a heartbreaker.
Glunz qualified for the finals of the 100-meter dash, but didn’t run, and finished fourth in the 200-meter dash.
The girls’ team was the story of the day.
Mariah Gardner won the 1,600- and 3,200 meter runs and earned automatic qualifying.
Ashley Robertson also qualified for state with a second place finish in the 3,200-meter run.
Kendyl Flaming had a big day for the Wildcats, winning the 100-meter hurdles and finishing second in the 300-meter hurdles. Both earn her spots on the track in Omaha.
Snider said Flaming broke a 40-year old school record in the 100-meter hurdles by nearly 0.6.
The girls have the potential do some big things at State Track. They have the chance to medal when getting down do Burke.
The girls’ 3,200-meter relay team, Robertson, Ryleigh Hanson, Reagan Pelster and Gardner, was third, but earned an additional qualifying spot.
Brooke Bryant was also an additional qualifier in triple jump after a third place finish at districts.
State track will be Friday and Saturday for Classes C and D.
Only Robertson and Pelster haven’t ran at state track before.
Snider said running in Burke Stadium is a whole new animal.
“Nobody really understands it until being personally experienced. The girls are working hard and focused right now. They want to be successful while down at State Track,” Snider said.
