PCS girls’ basketball prepares for postseason

The Perkins County girls’ basketball team broke a six-game losing streak last week, getting a win on the road at Maxwell, before falling to perennially strong South Platte Saturday evening on Senior Night.
Maxwell
Maxwell (4-16) gave the Plainsmen all they wanted in the first quarter. All five starters scored for PCS, helping it to a 18-15 lead.
As the game went on, PCS Head Coach Deanne Bishop said her team tried to do a better job defensively of limiting Maxwell’s options in the lane and also utilized a full-court zone press. Hitting the boards hard also was a key to success.
Holding Maxwell to 10 second quarter points, the Plainsmen continued have multiple players score.
Kailee Potts made two baskets and three free throws in the quarter.
Five points by Libby Cole and four from Hallie Fisher helped PCS to a 35-25 halftime advantage.
The defensive philosophy paid off as the night went on. Perkins County held Maxwell to 14 second half points.
On the offensive end, Potts finished the game strong, making three second half 3s on her way to  28 points on the night.
Fisher scored 12 points and Cole pulled down a team high nine rebounds to help PCS to a 66-39 win.

South Platte
PCS dug itself into a 2-11 hole to start the game against 12-6 South Platte, but finished out the first quarter on a 14-4 run over a 3:25 span, highlighted by a late three pointer by Autumn Anderson.
Missed opportunities at the charity stripe by PCS left the Plainsmen trailing 26-30 at halftime. Perkins County went 1-6 from the line, but got a three pointer by Cole and four points by Maggie Fisher off the bench.
PCS was slow to get started offensively in the second half and trailed 29-37 with two minutes gone in the third quarter. Cole carried the offensive load in the second half, scoring seven in the second quarter and nine points in the half.
Perkins County hung around as time ran down, never trailing by more than 11 points, but unable get over the hump and cut the deficit to less than seven.
Bishop liked how PCS never gave up.
“Our team showed a good job of being resilient and crawled back into the game when we got behind even though there are big, momentum-swings in a game,” Bishop said, adding, moving forward the Plainsmen need to find a way to minimize their opponents’ runs so  they don’t dig themselves into a hole.
PCS lost the game 43-51.
Cole a team high 16 points and 10 rebounds. Potts also finished in double figures with 11 points.
