Students’ project benefits food pantry

A team of Wallace elementary students have been working hard this semester to benefit those in need. ESU 16 challenged local HAL students to build a Nebraska icon or landmark out of food that could later be donated to the food pantry in North Platte.
The Wallace Wildcat Canstruction Team got busy creating drawings and 3D models. Once they had their design, a covered wagon, the students started a can food drive at their school. They decided to have a Class Can War, and the entire school, kindergarten through 12th grade, participated in an effort to help these students reach their goal.
With a lot of hard work, and a great deal of generosity from the Wallace community, the students were able to collect 1,421 cans for their structure. The team then began to build.
These students spent every lunch recess in the month of January and half of February preparing, collecting, and building for this project.
The structure was not as tall as the students hoped due to the variation in can sizes, but the amount of problem-solving and team building this project provided was priceless.
The Wildcats have decided to try and start a food pantry in the community of Wallace, and have been working hard to sort and organize the cans that were donated.
