Larry Bastian

Larry Donald Bastian, 74, was born on March 29, 1948, in Oakland, Calif., to Richard and Lucille Miles Bastian. He passed away on Feb. 9, 2023, in Grant, Neb. 

At the age of six weeks, Larry took his first plane ride with his mom to join his dad on the family farm southeast of Madrid, Neb. He attended elementary and high school in Madrid and received his Associate of Arts Degree from McCook College. 

Early in 1973, Larry met the love of his life, Gloria Ellis, and the two were married on Nov. 4, 1973, at the United Methodist Church in Madrid.

Throughout his life, Larry worked a variety of jobs, including working for George Lee, Big Byron, farming, owning a restaurant, and serving as a custodian at Ogallala High School for the last 15 years. 

He is survived by his wife, Gloria of Grant; son, Steven of Columbus, Neb.; daughter, Sylvia of Alexandria, Va; brother, Bill (Linda) Bastian of Omaha, Neb., and family; sister Donna (Wayne) Ogg of Ogallala and families, Laveta (Lloyd) Witt of Hebron, Neb., and families; mother-in-law, Betty Ellis; and brother-in-law, Stanley (Troi) Ellis of Red Cloud, Neb., and their families; as well as many friends and family members.

Larry was preceded in death by an infant daughter, his parents, grandparents, sister Jean, brother Tom, nephew Christopher, and his father-in-law, Glenn Ellis.

A memorial has been established in Larry’s name for later designation. Condolences may be shared at bullocklongfuneralhome.com, where the service was streamed live.

Services were held on Monday, Feb. 13, 2023, at 11 a.m. at the New Life Fellowship Church in Grant, with Pastor John Goodell officiating. Private interment was in the Madrid Cemetery prior to the service.

Visitation was on Sunday, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m., at the Bullock-Long Funeral Home in Grant.

Bullock-Long Funeral Home of Grant was in charge of arrangements.
