Calvin John Young

Calvin Young, 91, passed to his eternal life with his Savior on Feb. 13, 2022, surrounded by family, friends, a great medical team, and his Pastor. He was blessed to have lived an incredible life.
Calvin John Young was born on the farm north of Madrid on Oct. 10, 1930, to parents John and Irene (Vonderfecht) Young. Calvin was the middle child, having an older sister, Carolyn Young Weins, and a younger brother, Wendell Young. They learned the value of hard work early in life and moved to a farm south of Madrid where he lived many years and learned the skill of farming. He passed these important values of a strong work ethic and supporting your family on to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Attending school in Madrid, Calvin was gifted with outstanding athletic ability. He participated and excelled in all sports and took second in the State Track Meet in Pole Vaulting. He vaulted eleven feet with a bamboo pole, landing in the sand. The glory years are still talked about, and his love for pole vault was passed down to his grandchildren.
Calvin married his high school sweetheart, Irma Marie Wendt, on June 7, 1953, at Zion Lutheran Church in Grant. Thank goodness Irma was also raised in a farming family and understood the love for listening to AM radio and for driving the country roads for the joy of it. Calvin and Irma had their first child, Peggy Ann Young Haenfler, in 1954, followed by Bruce Douglas Young in 1956 and lived north of Madrid. Faith always being the center of their family; all were faithful members of the Zion Lutheran Church in Grant.
Calvin definitely passed his love for farming on to his children as Peggy and Bruce have followed the journey of their parents into the farming profession. Calvin and Irma moved to Grant in 1990 and Calvin continued to farm until he suffered a stroke in 2012. His mind remained sharp until the end, and he remained relevant and in contact with the farming industry, grain prices, and the grandchildren’s activities and schedules. In his final years at Golden Ours, he lived for the visits from Irma and for seeing the grandchildren any time he could; it filled him with joy and life.
Calvin is survived by his wife of 68 years, Irma; by his children Peggy and Bruce; his son-in-law, Alan; and daughter-in-law Lynette (Bo); his grandchildren Trisha and husband Chris, great-grandchildren Evan, Dillon, and Morgan, Troy, and wife Lauren, great-grandchildren, Jaxson and Maddox, Ashleigh and husband Jason, great-grandchildren Alexa, Landon, Jace, and Jagger, Aspen and partner Ben, great-grandchildren Kyler and Braxton and Alyssa, great-grandchild Ella. He is also survived by his sister, Carolyn Young Weins, and many nephews and nieces.

Services were on Friday, Feb. 18, 2022, at 10 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Grant, with Rev. Michael Heckmann officiating. Burial will be in the Grant Fairview Cemetery.
Visitation was on Thursday, from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the Bullock-Long Funeral Home in Grant.
