A group of PCS first graders receives their hearing screening from Lion member Allen Darrell of Millard.

Perkins County students screened for sight and hearing

On Dec. 7 and 8, the Nebraska Lions Foundation sight and hearing van was in Perkins County to screen school students at the local PCS and Mennonite schools.

A total of 310 students were tested in two days. This included pre-schoolers through tenth graders.

The unit was manned by Lion Allen Darrell of Millard. Assisting him were 13 Grant Lions members, school nurse Kerri Minster, Stacy Friesen and other local school teachers and personnel.

This type of school health screening is done annually. Costs are borne by the local Grant Lions. The rate is $150 for the first day and $100 for the second.

Results of the tests indicated that there were 27 sight referrals and 24 hearing referrals. A referral means that it is suggested that the student be referred to an optometrist for further professional consultation.

If a student lacks financial resources for eye or ear corrections, the Grant Lions will often financially assist that student.

At the conclusion of the screenings, mobile screening unit manager and driver commented that “these students are very good, well behaved individuals.”

He said he also appreciated the help from the local Lions and the school personnel. Things went very smoothly.

If people have questions regarding Lions Club sight and hearing projects, they may contact Grant Lions President Gloria Patrick or any other Lions member.
