Game and parks activities scheduled for May

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will be hosting several activities this month at Lake McConaughy, Lake Ogallala and Ash Hollow. State park entry permits are required on all vehicles entering these areas.

Endangered species day

Celebrate National Endangered Species Day with a pizza party on Saturday, May 19. The event will be held at the Lake McConaughy Visitor/Water Interpretive Center. Registration for the event is required. Presentations on threatened and endangered species of Nebraska will be given by professionals that work with these animals. 

Fashion a Feeder 

Make bird feeders from recyclable items on Sunday, May 20, at 2 p.m. at the Lake McConaughy Visitor/Water Interpretive Center. Registration for the event is required. The park naturalist will provide supplies to turn an empty soda bottle, milk carton, tin can, etc. into a feeder. Participants should bring recyclable item(s) to use. This activity is free of charge. 

Essentials of Kayaking

Kayaking principles and safety skills will be taught by a boating safety officer, followed by time on the water on Thursday, May 24, 6-8 p.m., at Spillway Bay. Registration is required and event is limited to seven people. All materials will be provided, but personal kayaks are welcome. 

Birds and Breakfast 

The park naturalist will give a presentation on the basics of birding and bird ID on Saturday, May 26, at 8 a.m. at the Ash Hollow State Historical park/picnic area. 

After the presentation, there will be a guided bird walk on the trails of Ash Hollow. Binoculars, bird guides and checklists will be provided. Breakfast will be supplied by the Friends of Ash Hollow. 

Birds on Canvas

Follow guided instruction on an original painting or a new idea on Saturday, May 26, 2-4 p.m. and Sunday, May 27, 2-4 p.m., at the Lake McConaughy Visitor/Water Interpretive Center. 

This month’s painting will be bird themed, in celebration of Nebraska Bird Month. Canvas, brushes, paint, and refreshments will all be provided for a fee of $10 per person. Limit 20 people. Registration is required.

Water a Flower Day

After a short presentation, transplant flowers into larger pots on Wednesday, May 30, from 6-7 p.m. at the Lake McConaughy Visitor/Water Interpretive Center. Registration for the event is required. 

Each child will get to decorate their own pot and transplant a flower to take home. Refreshments will be provided. This event is free of charge.
