Protest hearings took place at the Perkins County Board of Equalization meeting on July 17, where the commissioners heard four property valuation protests.

Mid-America Agri Products was present to protest the valuation of land at the Madrid Ethanol Plant. The valuation, as determined by the assessor, was $16,364,768, with the taxpayer requesting a valuation of 8,204,761, stating the assessor’s valuation was in excess of a fair value for tax purposes.

Ardell and Berniece Brown requested their valuation be changed from $604,773 to $538,420. Brown’s reasoning was 2013-16 sales averaged $4,961/acre, and if assessed at 70 percent that would equal $3,471/acre, times $155.12 acres in the farm for a value of $538,421.

Laurie Walrod requested her valuation be changed from $60,000 to $56,000. She stated her house doesn’t meet electrical wiring codes, has no air-conditioning, a 25-year-old heater, one functioning bathroom, leakage in basement during heavy rain, half asbestos siding on garage and minimal maintenance in 15 years.

Assessor Peggy Burton said she reached an agreement with Chase and Melissa Sauder on their valuation due to some incorrect measurements, but it was past deadline for them to withdraw their protest.

The commissioners accepted the testimony of the assessor in all cases and valuations remained the same.
