Distillers grains spill on highway

A non-injury accident covered Highway 23 with distillers grains between Madrid and Grant on Friday morning, June 22.

Around 9:20 a.m., Shane Lapp, 44, of Ogallala, swerved the Kenworth semi he was driving westbound on Highway 23 after appearing over a hill and seeing slowed traffic.

He hit a no-passing sign on the north side of the road and distillers grains he was hauling spilled onto the roadway. The truck, owned by Becker Family Farms of Sutherland, came to a stop in the north ditch.

Madrid and Grant Volunteer Fire Departments, Perkins County Ambulance and Perkins County Sheriff’s Office responded to the accident.

The fire department hosed the grain off the highway and the Nebraska Department of Roads used a street sweeper to push the rest to the shoulders.

Sinner’s Paint and Body Shop of Wauneta towed the truck onto the highway where it was driven from the scene.

Crews remained on scene until around 1:30 p.m.
