Esther McArtor - August 22, 2013


Esther McArtor was born on March 25, 1914 at Naponee, Neb. She was the eighth of nine children born to Charles and Mary Rolland Frates. Esther grew up in Lexington, Neb. where she graduated from Lexington High School in 1932 with normal training for her teaching career. Esther moved with her family to rural Brule, Neb.where she began teaching.
It was here where she met the love of her life, Vance McArtor. They were married on Sept. 24, 1936 in Grant, Neb. They made their first farm home south of Brule and later moved northwest of Grant. In 1949 they moved into Grant so their children could attend school in town.
In addition to raising her children, Esther enjoyed working in the elementary school cafeteria. She retired after 17 years with the lunch program.
Esther was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist Church at an early age and continued her faith as a member of the Grant United Methodist Church. She served as a Sunday School teacher and was a member of the Unity Circle with the U.M.W.
When her children were growing up she served as a den mother with the Scouts and helped with the Grant Rainbow Girls.
Esther continued to maintain her home in Grant after Vance died in 1984. She moved to the Golden Ours Convalescent Home in 2006 and was admitted to the Perkins County Community Hospital the end of July where she passed away on Friday, Aug. 16, 2013. She had reached the age of 99.
In addition to her parents and husband, Esther was preceded in death by seven sisters, Jennie Kirkpatrick, Grace Enochs, Mable Halligan, Mary Frates, Florence Margritz, Edna Frates, and Elva Jean Onken; her brother, Virly Frates; a daughter-in-law, Jeanne McArtor, an infant grandson, Neil McArtor; three infant great-grandchildren, Angel, Brandon, and Brenda Cook.
She is survived by those she dearly loved: two sons, Jerry and wife Carolyn of rural Grant and Bill of Park Hills Mo.; one daughter, Kathleen Hartman of Sidney; seven grandchildren, Brad and wife Dana McArtor of Grant, Kelly and wife Bridgett Hartman of Ogallala, Neb., Christy and husband Marty Stratman of Brush Colo., Marci and husband Rob Paup of Grand Island, Neb., Jon McArtor, stationed with the U.S. Navy in Maryland, Marla and husband Chris Lambert of Park Hills, Mo., Kim and husband Dan Schildhauer of Kimball, Neb.; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy McArtor and JoLettah Brestel; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Aug. 21, 2013 at the Grant United Methodist Church with Pastor Nora Mendyk officiating. Burial was in the Grant Fairview Cemetery.
A memorial has been established.
Bullock-Long Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
