Alexis Raffaeli of Ogallala, granddaughter of Wendell and Marcy Shalla of Grant, earned three bronze medals during the National Youth Weightlifting Tournament held in Daytona Beach, Fla., on June 12.
Raffaeli started lifting during the summer of 2013 in North Platte and later found a coach in Ogallala, Gerard Brennen.
She started Olympic lifting in November 2013 and attended her first competition at North Platte one month later.
“I would have qualified for the national meet, but you have to qualify during the calendar year of the national,” Raffaeli said.
She competed again on April 5, qualifying for a trip to Daytona Beach.
“It was a lot of fun,” she said. “There were a lot of records broken.”
During the national competition, each competitor had three attempts in the snatch, and three in clean and jerk. Raffaeli lifted 49 kilograms in the snatch, losing her balance in an attempt at 52 kilograms.
She performed lifts of 59, 62 and 64 kilograms in the clean and jerk, for a total of 113 kilograms in the snatch, and clean and jerk.
She received medals for the snatch, clean and jerk, and overall.
Raffaeli, who will be a sophomore at Ogallala High School this fall, plans to compete during October at Colorado Springs, Colo.
She is the daughter of Chris and Traci (Shalla) Raffaeli.
