Some Perkins County track athletes were bundled up in blankets and jackets until they had to compete at the Sutherland Invite on April 17.
The invite started with temperatures in the 30s with a stiff breeze blowing.
According to PCHS head track coach Shayne Hite, the weather did have a slight impact on the jumping events and some distance races. There were 13 personal records for the boys and eight for the girls.
“This is a time when performances are a little sluggish because of workouts as you can see with our personal records. Some of these were personal records because it is the first time they did an event,” Hite said.
The Plainsmen finished fourth and the Lady Plainsmen fifth.
Derek Sis had a solid day for PCS, winning the 400 meter dash with a time of :52.9. Sis would also win the triple jump with a distance of 41’ 3/4”.
The track teams will be in Hershey on Saturday, April 26 and then will host the SPVA Invite on May 2.
Hite is preparing his athletes for the district meet on May 15.
“Always little thoughts and ideas through the season that spin in my head thinking about what events I’ll have kids do at the district meet after seeing what other teams are doing, but I don’t share these with many individuals. It’s like a giant jigsaw puzzle and the fun part is putting it all together by May 15,” Hite said.
