There will be a lot to choose from as far as top caliber athletes for Elizabeth Strand, Wallace track coach. She will have nine girls and 15 boys on the Wildcat track squad this season.
There are 11 returning letter winners on the squad this season and include: Tanner Clough, Landon Swedberg, Josh May, Shane Anders, Hayley Storm, Juan Gomez, Andrew Gardner, Hayden Woodcox, Paige Aylward, Mickayla Sheets and Alexandria Lundvall.
Three boys will be on the Wildcat team with state track invite experience. Tanner Clough was sixth last year in the 3200 meters and Landon Swedberg and Shane Anders each made it to state for the discus.
“Our areas of strength should be boys distance and boys throwing,” Strand said.
There are 10 freshmen out this year, injecting some youth into the mix of athletes.
“We are very excited about the number of freshmen on the team this year so hopefully it will be a smooth transition for them and some of them will be able to make an impact,” Strand said. “Last year, the junior high track season ended up being just two meets due to weather, so they are inexperienced. Our girls team is small, so we will have several open events.”
The season starts in Grant at the Perkins County Quadrangular on March 27.
On May 23-24 the state track invite will be held in Omaha.
“I know we have athletes working towards finishing their season at the state meet in Omaha,” said Strand. “Our boys team is working on increasing their team points and placing higher at meets. We really focus on seeing improvement meet to meet and celebrating every time an athlete sets a new personal best.  Ideally, the season will be a positive experience for all of our athletes.”
