SWNCBC alerts Nebraskans to fair housing rights PDF Print E-mail

The Southwest Nebraska Community Betterment Corporation wants all Nebraskans to understand their fair housing rights.
The act makes discrimination in the sale, rental, and advertising in housing unlawful, and assures that citizens are treated equally. It prohibits housing discrimination based upon race, color, national origin, religion, age, gender, disability, marital status, or familial status.
Unfortunately, discrimination continues to occur and prevents many Nebraskans from having the chance to live in safe, affordable, quality housing. A lack of understanding about fair housing rights and how the laws can be enforced could be a barrier to fair housing.
Through education and awareness, families and individuals can recognize discrimination and take steps towards fair treatment. Anyone who feels that they have been discriminated against can file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. HUD is the federal agency designated to enforce the Fair Housing Act.
Until discrimination is recognized and addressed, many Nebraskans will continue to lack safe, affordable, quality housing. It is everyone’s right and responsibility to work together so that all Nebraskans have the right to housing free from discrimination.
