Halloween—fun or folly?

By Pastor Nora Mendyk
United Methodist Church, Grant

Dressing up and trick-or-treating is fun! Ignoring the dark side of Halloween is folly.
For some, the entry point to the dark side is toying with the ‘innocent’ Ouija board which basically asks a spirit to ‘guide.’ From there it goes to seances and you are hooked into a world of spiritualism.
Spiritualism is rampant in our society with all of the hype about vampires, TV shows searching for ghosts, good/bad witches, etc. Spiritualism is the dark counterfeit of true spirituality.
Make no mistake. “The thief comes only to steal and kill, and destroy. I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” - Jesus (from John 10:10)
When you allow your children to watch TV programs that try to hook you into the sensational spiritualism, you and your family are headed for trouble. When you allow your teenagers to listen to rap music that constantly bombards them with talk of suicide, you and your family are headed for trouble.
When you see someone being ‘pulled’ toward spiritualism or if you yourself hear the ‘sucking noise’ of the dark side, turn around and seek Jesus’ light. Believe me, the ‘innocent’ is far from innocent. Through the Holy Spirit, seek the person that truly rose from the dead that we might have life. (from John 3:16)
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” - Paul, (from Ephesians 6:10-12)
I enjoy the fun side of Halloween, the kids in costumes, handing out candy, the festive time of celebrating fall. This side of Halloween is fun.
On the dark side of Halloween there is another costume that fits the situation. It is the full armor of God.
“Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.” -Paul (from Ephesians 6:13-18)
Have fun this Halloween, but do not be fooled by the folly.
