Team makes nationals, coach makes YouTube PDF Print E-mail

Ecstatic over a win propelling them to nationals, the North Platte Community College women’s basketball team gave Coach Dick Thurin an unexpected slip in a Gatorade shower when they doused him after the game.
Thurin, a resident of Grant, led the Lady Knights to a 64-40 win at home in North Platte on March 13 against Dakota College-at-Bottineau, N.D.
Heading toward their coach with the cooler of Gatorade were players Paige Hasty, Lacey Houston and Jordan Dickerson. As Thurin attempted to dodge the bath, his feet slipped as they poured, sending him face first onto the court.
A fan in the stands also did a flip as he stepped onto the court to assist the fallen coach.
After getting his shoulder checked by a team trainer, Thurin was deemed okay and proceeded to host a camera interview by a local sportscaster.
Capturing the incident was Thurin’s granddaughter who sent the clip to YouTube, bringing national exposure to her grandpa and his team’s victory.
The Lady Knights (15-14) drew a number 16 seed to face number one seed Mesa Community College (24-6) on March 19 at the CougarPlex at Illinois Central College in East Peoria, Ill.
