Eight members from the Perkins County High FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) attended the PEER Education Retreat in Kearney on Feb. 25. The theme for this year’s retreat was “Meet the SPOTstones” (SPOT is State PEER Officer Team)
The members attending from Perkins County were Michelle Skeels, Korey Lake, Claire Friedel, Samantha Snogren, Mariah Curtis, Kayla Woodmancy, Renae Goodwin and JoAnn Schrotberger. FCCLA adviser Cathy Ochsner sponsored the members.
The members learned about the PEER Education teams relating to “Families First,” “Student Body” and “Financial Fitness from the state PEER team members.
All members listened to Todd Calfee and his wife and daughter talk about “The Alexis Project.” The Calfee’s daughter Alexis and her boyfriend were killed by a drunk driver and the family has started the project to encourage people to use designated drivers and make good decisions to potentially save their life and someone else’s life. A quote from their website:
“At the Alexis PROJECT, we believe that designated drivers are heroes and deserve to be treated as such. All it takes is for one person to make a good decision to potentially save their life or someone else’s. We strive to provide easy, accessible information on why driving drunk is dangerous and how you can become a hero by driving sober or riding with someone who is.”
Members also attended a session provided by the Kearney YMCA, called “Exercise Surprise” and everyone had a chance to energize during their session. Brian Broich from Grand Island presented a session on “Taking Credit Out of the Stone Age.” He warned of the dangers of using too much credit and how it can affect all areas of a person’s life not just when they use the credit, but in the future as well.
The PEER team session focused on learning more about the many programs FCCLA has to offer and testing the knowledge of its members through a Jeopardy-like team competition.
