The Chase County Commissioners approved a $5,000 donation from Keno funds to the SCORE (Science Camps Offer Rewarding Experiences) camp for this coming summer during their meeting Oct. 23.
The donation was the first of many Smith hopes to receive for the science camp, which is open to students who have completed grades 1-6.
This summer’s theme is “life, earth and physical—try science.”
Donations from individuals, organizations and businesses, grants, and student tuition fund the hands-on science camp. Smith said the budget for this coming summer is $60,000, of which half is funded by donations.
With the donations, students pay about half of the amount it would normally cost.
Tuition is about $100, with the exact amount to be set soon.
The camp, which is centered around Imperial, will be June 10-12 for grades 1-2, June 12-14 for grades 3-4 and June 11-13 for grades 5-6 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Smith said gift certificates for the camp make good Christmas presents. Registration will open soon. For more information contact Smith at (308) 882-4859 or at
