By Jan Rahn Managing Editor The Ogallala Invite is a favorite for cross country runners from Perkins County. “We love this meet,” said Coach Paula Wurst. “The team ran really well against top-notch competition—four Class B schools, three Class C, four Class D.” Individually, PCS harriers did not medal, but several set season or career personal records. Emily Kemling, Mariah Curtis and Courtney Lyon had season PRs. For the boys, Brendon Barry set a career PR and Jake Sexson and Brady Mailand has season bests. “I was super proud of the team,” said Wurst. “We were up against mostly B and C schools. Running against competition of this caliber makes us better. I was especially proud of Emily [Kemling], Courtney [Lyon], and Mariah [Curtis]; I have never had three girls in the 17’s at once. Awesome.” Wurst said the Hoffert sisters, Kendra and Jessi, also ran well. The efforts of Brendon Barry and Mark Hanson continue to impress her. They are both trying really hard to get into the 19’s, she said. “Their effort has the dual effect of pulling Robert [Engel], Jake [Sexson], and Brady [Mailand] to faster times, because they are all really working hard to keep one another in their sights. Next Meet The teams ran at UNK on the 24th, with results to appear next week, and then will be at home for the Perkins Co/SPVA invite on Oct. 4, followed by D-5 Districts, also at Grant, on Oct. 11.
