“An awesome way to start the season,” is how Coach Paula Wurst described the first cross country meet for Perkins County runners in Goodland.
The girls came away from last Thursday’s meet with a third place finish, an individual medal and two career bests.
“This is the best we have ever placed as a girls team at Goodland,” said Wurst.
Their 53 points as a team placed them behind Ogallala (36) and Colby (45).
Also finishing with a career best on the boys team was Mark Hanson.
“I was pleased with everyone’s efforts,” said Wurst. “The heat and wind didn’t seem to bother anybody, but it was 10 degrees cooler than last year, so that helped!”
Girls Division
Medaling for the girls was Emily Kemling in eighth place with a time of 17.53.
In 13th was Courtney Lyon closely followed by Mariah Curtis 15th and Kendra Hoffert in the 20th position. Jessi Hoffert placed 29th followed by Melissa Price who placed 30th  in a field of 55 runners.
Wurst said Kemling, Lyon and Curtis ran together for the first two miles, moving up constantly during the race.
“It was really nice to see such a solid pack,” said Wurst.  “They have been running together at practice; I was delighted to see them do the same in competition.”

Boys Division
“The boys also ran really well,” said Wurst.
As a team, they came in seventh with a score of 171 in a field of eight teams and 67 runners.
Mark Hanson’s career best was for his 20.20 time, finishing in 26th place.
Next was Brendon Barry finishing 29th with a time of 20.47, just off his career personal best.
Finishing 40th was Robert Engel followed by Jake Sexson in the 42nd position. Brady Mailand completed his first cross country meet, finishing 45th with a time of 23.54.
Coach Wurst complimented Coy Aerni and Dylan Barry who both ran in the JV race, finishing 16th and 20th respectively.
“They did a nice job for their first race ever,” said Wurst.
