UNO holds commencement
More than 1,500 students received degrees Friday, May 4, and Saturday, May 5, during the spring University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) commencement ceremony. The two-day graduation weekend event is a new tradition for the university. Valerie Holt of Grant graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree and Stacy Dahlkoetter of Grant graduated with a Master of Arts degree. Former U.S. senator (and UNO alum) Chuck Hagel gave a graduation address to the assembled students and their family members and friends on May 4. Others who were honored during the ceremony included Omaha philanthropist Dick Holland, who received an honorary degree; faculty member Ethel Williams, who received a Chancellor’s Medal award; and Bob Houston, director of Nebraska’s Department of Corrections, who was recognized by the UNO Alumni Association.
Area students among grads
North Platte Community College held its 2012 spring commencement on Friday, May 11. Among the graduates were Matthew Greenwood, Grant, Associate of Applied Science in building construction technology; Danielle Schimonitz, Grant, Associate of Applied Science in dental assisting; Andrew Mahnken, Grant, Associate of Applied Science, welding and machine shop technology; Bert Ogg, Madrid, Associate of Arts; Jenna Walter, Madrid, Associate Degree Nursing; Travis Woodcox, Elsie, Associate of Arts.
