Kaleb Gaar, a student at Perkins County High School, was among the medalists at the 52nd Scholastic Contest at Chadron State College on Friday, April 13. Gaar won a gold medal in the general science test.
Gaar was one of the 1,427 entries in the contest, which featured 44 exams on CSC’s campus.
Other students from Perkins County who placed in the top 20 percent are Allison Kiolbasa, English usage, 9th; Lexi Schmidt, general biology, 10th; and Jakelynn Broeder, health, 7th.
Perkins County placed fifth in their division.
Each year, the scholastic contest attracts the region’s brightest high school students. The event, which began in 1961, is believed to be the oldest and largest of its kind in the region.
Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded to the top placewinners in each test.
The seniors who win gold qualify for CSC’s Scholastic Achievement Award, which covers the in-state portion of tuition for the next academic year. The winning school in each division receives a plaque.
