Kimball takes first place plaque from Plainsmen
By Pastor Vince Carrig
Mike Daum’s five-point run in the third quarter meant doom for the Plainsmen’s hopes of winning the 2011 Perkins County Booster Club Holiday Tournament as Kimball left Grant with a 48-34 win and a plaque Friday night.
Daum withstood contact to score and sink the “and one,” then drove arc-to-rack on the Longhorns’ next trip to put Kimball in command in the third quarter, 33-25.
The 6-foot-5 sophomore forward flashed the range in his game by reaching for a three- pointer in the first quarter and dominated scoring with 20 points.
Taylor Boldt heroically did all he could to answer Daum, registering a putback and a breakaway layup off his own steal on consecutive third quarter plays to almost tie Perkins County with the Longhorns at 26-25.
Boldt, a senior forward, scored or assisted on the Plainsmen’s first six points and bolted his team to an early 6-2 lead. He led Perkins County with 12 points.
Junior guard Caleb Reuter sprung off Kimball’s bench and added instant offense—a three-pointer and four foul shots.
Reuter’s three pointer fell at the third quarter buzzer and gave the 7-2 Longhorns an insurmountable 11-point lead.
A sore subject for the Plainsmen, they fouled the Longhorns into the double bonus in the first half and sent Daum to the line three times in the fourth quarter and shot just 2-for-14 on their own opportunities.
Jake Sexson hit two and Quinton Hite one three-pointer and scored seven points apiece for Perkins County, which struggled with 14-for-56 (25 percent) shooting from the field.
