By Jan Rahn Managing Editor With the fall/winter season comes the flu season, and clinics are preparing to immunize their patients. Beginning next week, shots will be available at both the Grant Medical Clinic and the Colglazier/Demmel Medical Clinic. Each clinic will offer immunizations daily, with a special shot day scheduled at the Colglazier/Demmel Clinic. • Grant Medical Clinic: Flu vaccinations are available at the clinic beginning Oct. 17 from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1-5 p.m. weekdays, and during the morning hours on Saturday. No appointment is necessary. • Colglazier/Demmel Clinic: In addition to regular daily hours at the clinic, patients may receive a vaccine during a “special shot day” on Wednesday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The clinic offers three levels of vaccine. The flu, more scientifically known as influenza, is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. The influenza virus usually enters the body through mucus membranes in the mouth, nose, or eyes. When a person with the flu coughs or sneezes, the virus then becomes airborne and can be inhaled by anyone nearby.
