By Jan Rahn Managing Editor Despite the intense heat and her first time on the Chappell course, senior golfer Janet Kuskie improved her back nine and claimed third place at the Creek Valley Invite on Friday, Sept. 1. “She played consistent golf and putted well,” said Coach Troy Kemling. Although the Plainsmen girls did not score where they had hoped, they were able to take some positives from the meet, said Kemling. The girls placed sixth at the invite with a score of 535. Bridgeport won the meet with a score of 405 in a field of 10 schools. Kuskie’s third place score was 99 (51-48). Bayard’s J. Pilkington carded 91 for first place. Kemling said the girls’ short game is still a work in progress. “Most [of the] girls had better ball striking today, but overall, we did not execute our putting or chipping very well,” said Kemling. Adding a couple of extra strokes each hole just made it tough to compete with other teams. Kemling praised the performance of freshman Rachel Carrig who played her first meet. “She played JV and made it for her first nine holes ever—it’s always fun to see a meet through eyes of a first-timer,” said Kemling. “She did a nice job today and learned a lot in the process.” Next Meet The golfers hosted Hershey Tuesday and will travel to Lexington on Friday, Sept. 9. Results from the meets will appear in next week’s issue.
