The Perkins County cross country runners faced “beastly” heat last week during their first meet in Goodland, with temps over 100.
However, the runners who survived the heat actually ran very well, said Coach Paula Wurst.
Senior Ashley Kemling medaled in her division of the race, finishing 20 seconds faster than last year.
Jessi Hoffert medaled in the junior/senior division, capturing ninth place.
Anita Allgeier (PCS exchange student) was just out of achieving medal status with a 12th place finish, and Kendra Hoffert finished 17th in the freshman/sophomore division.
“Just finishing the race under the hot conditions was an admirable effort on everyone’s part,” said Coach Wurst.
Brendon Barry was the top finisher in the boys junior/senior division, finishing five seconds off his personal best for 15th place.
Finishing in 17th with a strong race was Seth Burge.
Jake Sexson and Mark Hanson ran well together throughout the race, with Hanson’s finishing time being a personal best...“Which was an astounding feat at 100+ degrees!” said Wurst.
Austin Thelander’s initial race was also remarkable, said Wurst, keeping his teammates in sight and finishing only 18 seconds behind Hanson.
The runners who did not complete the course due to the heat, which was completely okay, said Wurst, included Mariah Curtis, Courtney Lyon, Dalton McCormick and Robert Engel. Becca Cornelius was showing livestock at the Nebraska State Fair.
Next Meet
“Hopefully the heat wave has broken and we will have cooler temperatures at Imperial on Thursday!” said Coach Wurst.
The runners travel to Chase County High School’s invite on Sept. 8.
