There is no place like Nebraska–and there’s nothing like a Runza PDF Print E-mail

Nebraskans far from home long for a taste of home!

While New York City is a gourmet’s gastronomical delight, the Runza, a tasty German-Russian meat and cabbage pie, is not available, but made and eaten in Nebraska. The Runza is just one of the many Nebraska delicacies that Nebraskans in New York have cravings for, but are too far out of reach!
To savor that taste of home, The Nebraska Society of New York is organizing the much awaited and long overdue comeback of the Taste of Nebraska, a fundraiser to benefit the Nebraska Society of New York scholarship program granting funds to deserving New York students who want to attend the University of Nebraska.
The Taste of Nebraska is Saturday, April 30 from 3-7 p.m. at the Irish Rogue located at 356 W. 44 St. between 8th & 9th Ave. in Manhattan.
The goal for the event is not only to raise funds for the scholarship program, but provide an evening to reunite alumni and friends of Nebraska with their favorite Nebraska goodies. The Kool-Aid man will also make an appearance, handing out packets of Kool-Aid and posing for pictures with the kids. Celebrating its 85th anniversary, Kool-Aid is one of Nebraska’s oldest and most famous brands!
Local businesses donating include: Ole’s Steakhouse, Ogallala Down, Ferraro Coffee of Oshkosh, artist Kate Jensen of Ogallala, Marma Designs by Marsha Lee, and KTK Kards by Karen Farnham.
At the general store, New Yorkers can stock up on Dorothy Lynch salad dressing, Colby Ridge popcorn and bottles of wine from a variety of Nebraska wineries.
“We are very excited to enjoy the best things Nebraska has to offer without having to fly home!” said Marsha Lee, former Perkins County resident and president of the Nebraska Society of New York.
“With over 4,000 Nebraskans in the NYC area, Taste of Nebraska will be better than any Broadway show or meeting Al Roker at Rockefeller Plaza!” said Lee, a Wheatland High School graduate.
Tickets for the Taste of Nebraska fundraiser are $50 per person and $10 for children (12 and under). They are available at the door or online at www.tasteofnebraska.com and include unlimited beer, wine and soda as well as a variety of Nebraska fare such as Runzas, Valentino’s Pizza, Fairbury hotdogs, and UNL Dairy ice cream.
The Nebraska Society of New York, official University of Nebraska alumni chapter, is dedicated to serve and enrich the University of Nebraska and its friends by attracting and retaining them through involvement with the association.
