Pitching with Pritch...Another season wound down PDF Print E-mail

By Larry Pritchett

Past PCHS Activities Director

Weather permitting we are off to the boy’s state basketball tournament this week.
When I was putting this together, the snow was coming pretty good and the forecast for the rest of the week and in the middle of the state plus Lincoln wasn’t all that promising. But that is why we have all-wheel drive vehicles–so we can “mush” our way to Lincoln.
I actually have a job for this year’s tournament.
Our son Troy is coaching one of the Bison teams this summer and we are going to go watch some of the players who have been nominated to play by their coaches.  The actual try-outs are Sunday and I will get to help with those also.
It will be fun getting together with the coaches during the tournament and on Sunday.
These summer teams have changed a lot in the past few years.  In 1995 I got to coach the Las Vegas team what was then sponsored by Valentino’s.  We played some practice games against some college players in Lincoln and then in Omaha and we went only to Vegas and played in that tournament.  Now these teams do a lot more traveling.
Troy’s bunch will go to KU, Kansas City, Louisville, Kentucky and St. Louis and he has the sophomore group.  They will get to see a lot of good players along the way.  It is a fun thing to do and a great experience for the players and coaches.
State Tournament time is the climax to a great winter for the teams that make it to Lincoln. I have some friends coaching some teams that made it and two of the coaches are former players on the Vegas team that I coached.
There are also some local teams that you want to do well.  Mullen, Kimball, North Platte St. Pats and Wauneta/Palisade are teams from this area plus Scottsbluff and Holdrege.

Goofy Football Fans
Probably the only people who are crazier about their football than some Nebraska fans would be the fans of the Southeast Conference.
Everyone in that conference tries to outdo the rest of the group and it has given the conference lots of pretty good football teams and some stories that almost defy explanation.
Auburn University, which is in Auburn, Ala., and the University of Alabama both has fans that are a little close to the edge.  Both sets of fans have tried their hand at some hijinks at one time or another, and they both poke fun at each other’s intelligence, or lack thereof, in most cases.
Just a couple of weeks ago, an Alabama fan called in on a national talk show and told the host how the caller had gone to Auburn and poisoned two large trees where for years Auburn fans have gathered to celebrate big victories during football season. He was arrested and probably will do some jail time.
Not to be outdone, there is now a story that some Auburn fans have retaliated and have gone to the Alabama campus and used some poison there.
Officials at Alabama have no clues on who the culprits were, but they did state that the objects that were poisoned, two light poles, would survive.
