Hastings Memorial Library now offers downloadable audiobooks, eBooks PDF Print E-mail

Hastings Memorial Library has recently expanded its services with digital audiobooks and eBooks available to download from the library’s website.

Library cardholders can check out and download digital media from the comfort of their own homes by visiting the library’s webpage at http://www.grantnebraska.com/library.shtml and clicking on a link that says “Download audiobooks and eBooks.”

From here the public can browse the collection, check out materials with their library card, and download to PC, Mac®, and many mobile devices.

To get started, they will need to install free software onto their computer.

For audiobooks this software is: Overdrive® Media Console™. To read eBooks, they’ll need Adobe® Digital Editions. Links to both of these software applications can be found on the main page of the service.

Titles can be enjoyed immediately on a computer or transferred to a variety of devices, including iPod®, Sony® Reader, Barnes and Noble nook™, and many others.

Overdrive is developing an app to support the Apple iPad® which should be available soon, but the Amazon Kindle® eReader is not currently supported.

In addition, some audio titles can also be burned to a CD to listen to on-the-go.

Titles will automatically expire at the end of the lending period. That means no late fees will be applied to a library account!

“eBooks are growing in popularity and we are excited to offer this format in addition to the thousands of audiobooks that are also available,” said Robin Quinn, Hastings Memorial Library director. “Our new collection offers hundreds of best-selling and classic titles, all of which can be read on your computer or compatible portable reading device or downloaded for listening on most mp3 players.”

With hundreds of popular fiction and non-fiction titles to choose from, this new collection is guaranteed to have something for everyone. Download best-selling novels, well-known classics, self improvement guides, and much more.

This new service is powered by OverDrive and is the result of a partnership between Hastings Memorial Library, 58 other member libraries across the state of Nebraska and the Nebraska Library Commission.

A valid Hastings Memorial Library card provides access to all of these titles for free. While the service is easiest to enjoy from home, library staff are more than happy to assist patrons on site at the library as well.
