An excellent finish to the cross country season occurred last Thursday, Oct. 14 at the district tournament at the Grant Golf Course with nearly every Perkins County runner improving their time.

The girls team will attend the state tournament in Kearney on Friday, Oct. 22, and junior Ashley Kemling, who finished second individually, will make her third trip to the annual competition held near the UNK campus.

Kemling’s time of 16:22 put her in second place behind Dundy County-Stratton’s Gabby Mullanix, who finished in 16:05.

“The girls third place finish was no surprise,” said Coach Paula Wurst. “Tim (Colglazier, assistant coach) and I both felt that if the girls were healthy and ran well, the only teams we had to worry about were St. Pat’s and Dundy County.”

Perkins County did indeed finish behind the two teams with 51 points. St. Pat’s was first with 42 points and Dundy County-Stratton second with 49 points.

“Everyone ran lights out,” said Wurst.

Ashley took more than 30 seconds off last week’s time; Jessi (Hoffert) finished just out of medals in 17th, nearly a minute faster than the previous week. Courtney Lyon ran 15 seconds faster, and Krystal Gaar, who still wasn’t 100 percent after an illness, gave tremendous effort.

Anna Fournier reduced her time by nearly 40 seconds and Becca Cornelius, also ill at conference, ran well.

The boys season ended with a sixth place finish as a team, with no individuals qualifying for state.

They also showed vast improvement with four of the six boys setting season personal records. Dalton McCormick took 30 seconds off and Seth Burge was over 30 seconds faster than last week. Jake Sexson was 20 seconds faster and Brendon Barry took an astounding 1:25 off his SPVA time. Robert Engel lost 30 seconds and Mark Hansen 20 ran seconds faster.
