Take responsibility for choices PDF Print E-mail

Dear Editor:

I never imagined I would be writing a letter to the editor, but there are some things that have been bothering me and I need to speak my mind.

In all my years of living and teaching here in Grant, we have always been a community that prides itself on the accomplishments and behaviors of our children.

I believe that all children are good and there are times when everyone can and will make poor choices. I am a strong believer in ownership and taking responsibility for the choices that we do make.

This past Saturday night, my son, Connor, was parked in the Kwik Stop parking lot. While there, three young men called him by name and proceeded to throw rocks at the car, shattering the window. They ran off down the alley.

Upon hearing this, my initial reaction was one of anger. That anger has turned to sadness.

I see a change in our youth and it scares me. We teach respect and responsibility. We preach being considerate and kind. Times have changed.

Parenting is different and kids are different. We need to work together as a community and let children know that even though times have changed, our expectations for them and their behavior have not.

It truly takes a village to raise a child and by working together we can continue to take pride in the community in which we live.
