In just over three weeks, the Cornhusker State Games torch will be coming through Perkins County.

On Monday, May 10, runners on their way south from Ogallala on the way to Imperial will pass through Grant carrying the torch on one of its many legs enroute to the opening ceremonies on June 25 in Lincoln.

Now is the time to become involved and be a part of the 2010 Cornhusker State Games Torch Run route.

Runners will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Participation is free and those who run/walk a segment will receive a T-shirt.

Applicants will be assigned segments in one-mile increments and may choose to run/walk as many as they wish.

The torch run will kick off on May 3 at the Wyoming border west of Scottsbluff.

The torch will reach Lincoln on May 27, but won’t officially end until the caldron is lit at the games’ opening ceremonies on June 25.

The route covers over 1,200 miles and involves approximately 1,000 runners and volunteers as it weaves its way across Nebraska.

The Cornhusker State Games will be held June 19-27 and is expected to draw more than 14,000 Nebraska athletes.

The torch run is sponsored by the Nebraska Army National Guard and Air National Guard.
