Myron Harms has 10 new baby calves at his farm northwest of Madrid. The little ones and their mothers braved snow showers in the night Sunday and a bitter day Monday with high winds and temperatures in the teens. The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office reports all cattle and calves as of Jan. 1 in Nebraska were down 2 percent from a year ago, totalling 6.25 million head. The 2009 calf crop totaled 1.68 million head, down 3 percent from 2008. On Jan. 1, cattle and calves on feed for slaughter in all Nebraska feedlots totaled 2.5 million head, which is the same as last year.  All cattle and calves in the U.S. as of Jan. 1 totaled 93.7 million head, which is 1 percent below the 94.5 million from one year ago at the same time.
