|Council denies variance request on stone|
By Jan Rahn
In a tie-breaking vote, Grant City Council denied a variance request to Marvin Stumpf on a gravestone he placed in Fairview Cemetery that was out of compliance with cemetery rules and regulations.
Stumpf, a defendant in a court case concerning the same issue, gave a presentation to council members at their regular meeting Jan. 26 desiring a variance. The issue had been tabled at the last council meeting.
He was charged with a misdemeanor and found guilty of placing the oversized marker in the cemetery after being told he could not do so by members of the Grant Cemetery Board.
Stumpf was seeking a variance from the city prior to his sentencing in Perkins County Court which has been set for Feb. 24.
Several community members attended the council meeting where some made comments prior to the vote by council members on the variance request.
Mayor Mike Wyatt cast a ‘yes’ vote to break a 2-2 tie in denying the variance. Voting yes were council members Wayne Pick and Darrell Pierce. Voting no were Tim Pofahl and Dennis Hansen.
